Chandayan - what a waste of public money!

India sent an unmanned space vehicle into moon yesterday. I just don't get it - why do we have to be a "me too" country in this when we have enough problems otherwise. Stake our claim to moon ? absoulte waste of public money, nothing else.

In fact India should just stop these things and use that money to do something for the poverty stricken millions that still live in India even after 61 years of Independence. I still don't understand the logic behind spending money for the "Space Reasearch" in India.

Can someone educate me on the need for it ?

  1. Jaydeep, there are a number of things that run on public money and do not function. Take our administrative system for example :)

Scientific pursuit is in fact one of the better ways public money is being spent. It is very short sighted to say that the money spent on the "launch" could have gone to feed poor people. I double quote the launch because there's more to gain from the launch than just the launch itself.

  2. I don't agree Jaydeep. The US has a federal defense budget of 450 Billion dollars. It just takes 50 billion of those greenbacks to eradicate poverty, and another 20 Billion to sustain that eradication. But will they do it?
    Don't bet on it.
This may be a third world space race (china did it first and now us) but we've done it at 1/10th the cost of other countries. The cost efficiency model works huh? We can also send payloads at a lower dollar/kilo rate. Its already attracting even NASA payloads. I think the launch is testament to the skill and capability of the best of the country - its even leading to reverse brain drain.
I myself am proud that we've been able to do it in a largely indigenous way.

    Btw how are you?

  3. Sir,
I do not agree with you. It is a matter of national pride. You see when, MGR introduced the noon meal scheme, everyone criticized him.Today , any scheme for education which needs World Bank funding requires to have Noon meal schemes factored in. BTW, you are a great writer too!!!
