About Jayadeep

I am Jayadeep Purushothaman and this is a blog on my personal thoughts and interests and also to force myself into blogging, which I wanted to from a long time. I do aspire to blog about something seriously in future, but for now I remain an amateur and anything goes here - but it turns out that the themes reflects my interests(which is always a moving target) well. It appears sustainable living is a key theme around here!

Currently, my main interest is sustainable living and self managing systems. For the moment it includes gardening, composting, swimming, cycling and running which also helps improve my mental and physical fitness. I was smitten by the beautiful game of football(the real one) as a kid. I wanted to be a footballer, but wasn't good enough even by Indian standards, so ended up as an engineer. My story on football can be read here. Gardening and composting is my latest interest and project since July 2009 where we are trying to use up the 500 sft of terrace to plant vegetables. Read more about our gardening project here and composting at home here

The principles that helps me align with my interests are the lean philosophy and 80/20 thinking. I moved from being a bit indecisive about various things to a decisive person following these principles. I used to feel guilty of many things that I couldn't do, but I got rid of my guilty feeling after I read the 80/20 book by Richard Koch.

I am also involved in developing a Football Academy and also trying to volunteer for another one. I also help couple of charity organizations, specifically the Association of People with Disability. Also read about my association with APD as well. I claim myself to be a runner now that I have completed a half marathon and a 25K run. After brooding a lot on the safety aspects of cycling, I am on the road cycling since January, 2009. Read my cycling posts here.

Philosophy about life has been influenced by failure in football and my later struggle to be myself. The Lean methodology has had a profound impact on how I look at things these days. Stephen Covey showed me the power of the circle of influence. Being lazy by nature, if there is one way for me to live life peacefully and effectively, it better be the 80/20 principle. I think I have found myself after a bit of struggle and I love being myself a lot these days! And I am seeing the bees and the butterflies around and seeing the waste in the environment(at work, home, all around) as well.

Professionally, my interests are around Performance Tuning of large scale applications, and applying lean methodology at work. An Operating System developer with Hewlett Packard for a long time, C and Shell programmer since 1990 and an aspiring Python and Ruby programmer for a while. Currently working as a Solution Architect in HP's Worldwide Presales organization that helps customers to migrate to HP platforms. This is my second innings at Hewlett Packard in a very different role that I was in before.

  1. Dear Shri Jayadeep,

Nice to see your blog. Yes, cycling nowadays, especially in Bangalore or Hyd'bad, is a scary proposition, but as you said, it may be OK if one os properly protected...the rest we leave to Higher Powers:-)

Also, congratulations for little Nishka and best wishes to her..children, the light of our life.
